massage therapy techniques Reviews and Advice

When you get a massage do you realize that the human hands have a positive experience that many people enjoy through therapeutic massage or bodywork. The effects of a good massage go much deeper than the skin's surface. Massage can:

The Tao of Back to School Shopping
For a parent, late August typically means one thing: back to school. Oh yes, we wish it meant sitting by the pool, getting a massage while drinking a drink with an umbrella in it, but no, for millions of parents it means getting their children ready to go back to school, typically kicking and screaming. This means buying new kids clothes for your brood, something that, depending on where you shop, can also mean a near catastrophic hit to your pocket book. Stores seem to have two schools of thought on the prices of these clothes: high prices or high volume. While you would like to stick to small mom and pop stores, it only makes financial sense to go to those giant chain stores to save some money.

Being a parent means giving up on a lot of deep seeded beliefs to save money. While you might have marched against capitalism and consumerist ways in college, today you just find the cheapest price and go with it. Regardless, back to school times becomes kind of a game in the way as you try and find the cheapest prices possible to make sure your kids get everything they need without sending your family to the poor house. This is done by visiting different locations to get good prices on specific pieces of clothing until you have full wardrobes.

Unfortunately, it seems like the cheapest shirt and the cheapest pair of pants is never at the same location. This means a lot of driving around town. While some people without kids might say that you're going a little too far to save a few dollars, unless you have kids you don't get that those $3 can be spent on dozens of pens or pounds of paper. If you are going to do this buy and dash concept of buying back to school clothing, it is important not go into it blind. Go to Mapquest or Google Maps and come up with a plan of attack that will make sure that you don't drive any further then you have to. You don't want to give that money you're saving on clothes back on gas.

One more thing to consider when getting back to school clothes: make sure they are good quality. It does no good buying a cheap pair of pants if they are going to simply fall apart after a month. Buy good quality and make sure that your kids like what you're getting them.

Asheville, NC Chiropractor Practices Massage Cupping
Massage cupping is a form of bodywork that, like acupuncture, and other ancient-healing techniques are being utilized by progressive health care professionals. Dr. David Nygaard runs Atlas Family Chiropractic in Asheville, North Carolina and he uses massage cupping in his practice."By creating negative pressure through suction, massage cupping therapy is used to relax muscles, loosen adhesions and to tone and lift connective tissue," he explains.

Cupping has roots in traditional Chinese medicine. Animal horns were hollowed out and a second small hole was made to allow air to be sucked out, creating a vacuum. It is believed that the original intention of cupping was to draw toxins out of snakebites and skin pustules.

The Evolution and Practice of Cupping

As the practice of cupping evolved, horns were replaced by bamboo and then glass. Cupping began to be used to draw all sorts of toxins to the surface and to divert blood flow. A collaborative study between China and Russia confirmed the clinical applications of cupping and led to its official use in Chinese hospitals.

Traditional glass cups are similar to and can even be replaced by brandy snifters. Practitioners light an alcohol-soaked cotton ball that is placed in the cup to create a vacuum. The cotton ball is removed and then quickly placed on the clients' skin. The practitioner can adjust the strength of the suction the cup creates by manipulating the intensity of the flame and how quickly the cup is placed.

Manual vacuum sets create the same suction using a tube or squeeze bulb that allows the therapist to create and release suction with more control. Mechanical vacuum machines take this development a step further, utilizing clear gages and different defined operating modes that make it simple to document results. Consistency of application is also near perfect, leading to successful results.

Massage Cupping Benefits Various Medical Conditions

"The theory behind cupping is similar to that of a hot compress," explains Nygaard. "The suction draws blood from the arteries into the capillaries. The blood is then returned through the veins cleansing the area of built up toxins."

Nygaard uses cupping to relieve inflammation, promote lymph drainage, stimulate blood flow, release stagnation and deep tissue pressure and sedate the nervous system. Cupping has also been used extensively to treat asthma and pneumonia and to ease troubled breathing.

Because of the sedating effect it creates in the nervous system, cupping is used to treat high blood pressure, anxiety, fatigue, insomnia, chronic headaches, neuralgia and rheumatism. Traditionally used to divert blood flow during surgery, modern surgeons have found that massage cupping used for lymph drainage can aid pre- and post-operative conditions and can even assist in the process of healing.

Massage Cupping Complements Other Treatments

Massage cupping is becoming popular as a complement to other treatments such as reflexology, deep tissue massage, hot stone therapy and aromatherapy. Because all body tissue, including bone and nerve tissues, respond well to magnetic therapy, some practitioners use magnetically-charged cups to further increase the healing properties of cupping.

"I find massage cupping to be a great complement to the Atlas chiropractic treatments my patients receive," says Nygaard. "So much of what I do in chiropractic treatments is about releasing pressure on affected joints and nerves. Once a patient's body is returned to its natural or orthogonal position through Atlas treatments, these problem areas are allowed to heal."

Massage cupping really helps to circulate blood and nutrients. Toxins are released and good circulation is restored. This greatly reduces inflammation and allows the body's systems to return to a normal healthy state.

Equine Mctimoney Manipulation
Mctimoney manipulation for animals is a treatment that has been developed from a form of human chiropractic treatment; however under current legislation the term chiropractor is a protected term and refers only to the treatment of humans therefore Mctimoney animal therapists are not chiropractors. The treatment was developed initially by John Mctimoney who was a human chiropractor; it has been developed over the years and is currently taught as a masters level course.

You should always consult your Vet before manipulation or massage treatment as it is illegal for anyone to treat your animal without your Vet's approval. Under the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966 it is illegal for any person to treat an animal unless they are a Veterinary Surgeon or a paraprofessional working under veterinary supervision.

Mctimoney treatment aims to correct misalignments in the horse's bones, generally focusing on the spine and the pelvis. It works alongside and encourages the body's natural ability to heal itself.
There are many factors in a horse's day to day life that can cause misalignments (restrictions in the normal range of movement in a joint). They can occur if a bone is forced further than its normal range of movement. Causes include: slipping or falling when being ridden, in the field or when travelling; poorly fitting tack; poor foot balance; repetitive or strenuous work or compensation from an injury.

Misalignments themselves can cause further problems including muscle tension and impaired nerve function. As the nervous system controls all bodily functions, problems which may not initially be identified as being caused by the spine can recover following treatment. All of this will affect how the horse feels, how it moves and will therefore affect its performance.

When any Mctimoney practitioner treats an animal the process is always the same, the treatment is holistic and takes into consideration the animal's whole body. Firstly a full history will be taken to identify any potential problems or areas that are likely to need attention. It is important to think about any falls or injuries that the horse has had recently and any stiffness etc that has been encountered whilst riding. Next the animal will be assessed by a whole body skeletal check and a gait analysis. The assessment identifies areas of muscle tension and misalignments which indicate restrictions in mobility. Adjustments can then be made only where needed.

Adjustments are relatively gentle but very fast. The speed of the adjustment is important, it causes muscle reflex which encourages the bone to return to its normal position and operate within its normal range of movement.

Following a treatment you will be given advice on aftercare. This will be specific to the horse and what has been discovered during treatment, however will generally include providing a rest period.
It is not unusual for the horse to appear tired and lethargic in the hours or days following a treatment. It is important that they have free access to water during this time.

An aftercare programme should be followed for best results. The animal should be kept calm and have a period of rest or restricted exercise. How this is managed will depend on the horse, it can be turned out if it will remain calm.

Following treatment the animal will need at least one follow up appointment to determine the progress that has been achieved. Depending on what is discovered during treatment the animal may need a series of treatments, further advice regarding this will be given once the animal has been assessed.

Asheville Chiropractor Treats Degenerative Disc Disease
Disc degeneration is a medical condition that is often labeled a disease. "Disc deterioration occurs when one or more discs become dehydrated and begins to deteriorate. This happens because of poor diet, not getting enough exercise or improper exercise or trauma. It also occurs naturally as a part of aging," says Dr. David Nygaard, founder of Atlas Family Chiropractic in Asheville, NC.

Cervical Discs

The discs are small, jelly-like pads made of cartilage contained in layers of fibrous tissue. These discs connect the bones of the spinal column acting to hold the proper space between the bones and also acting as shock absorbers. When healthy, the discs allow for a normal range of motion.

Cervical discs have a relatively low blood supply and therefore require surrounding joints to function properly to circulate fluids into and out of the disc to supply nutrients and expel waste. When the joints in the spine are not able to move normally, circulation is impaired and degeneration occurs.

Disc Degeneration can lead to other problems as degenerated discs become fragile and are more susceptible to tears in the outer fibers of the disc that keep its' shape. This can lead to serious conditions such as osteoarthritis and stenosis. It can also cause what is often referred to as slipped discs more properly known as disc bulging and herniation.

Spinal Decompression Treats Disc Degeneration

Subluxations, or misalignments in the spinal column, are one of the most common causes of pain in the neck and back. When vertebrae are not in their proper alignment, they put pressure on nerves in the spine causing irritation, inflammation and pain.

Many spine experts conclude that the vacuum of negative pressure created within the disc by non-surgical spinal decompression helps the disc to attract moisture from surrounding tissue, rehydrating and revitalizing thinning and torn degenerated discs. Stretching and massage may provide temporary relief from pain, but without addressing the cause of the problem, the pain will return.

"When you stop growing after puberty the discs become avascular, meaning they no longer receive a good supply of blood," explains Dr. Nygaard. "This means that they no longer heal as well or as quickly. Therefore, if a disc becomes compromised or injured it will continue to deteriorate without treatment."

Spinal decompression is used to create negative pressure in the spine. By stretching the spine, the space between discs is enlarged. This releases pressure on the discs and surrounding nerves allowing them to heal and receive vital fluids.

"One of the most amazing things about spinal decompression is that the negative pressure can create a vacuum effect that will actually suck bulging or herniated discs back inside their fibrous shell," adds Dr. Nygaard. "Decompression is the most effective form of treatment for severe cases of degeneration, herniation, stenosis and pressure on the nerves of the spine."

Clinical Study Proves Benefits of Spinal Decompression

A clinical study performed by the Orthopedic Technological Review in 2004 states that 86 percent of patients who were treated with spinal decompression experienced pain relief after treatment. Once the bones of the spine are in their proper position and nerves are allowed space to work properly, the discs can begin to heal as they receive nutrients. The treatment also stimulates cell regeneration in the cartilage of the discs speeding the healing process further.

Common causes of knee and joint pain and natural pain relief choices.
Chronic knee pain is a common complaint for countless men and women. The severity of this condition can range from mild discomfort during strenuous activity to debilitating pain that interferes with your daily life. For many, managing pain on a regular basis becomes as important as eating and sleeping.

Finding effective, long-lasting knee pain relief may depend on your specific condition and health status. Below are some of the more commonly diagnosed causes of chronic knee pain.

Arthritis: Arthritis is a degenerative joint disease in which the protective cartilage surrounding the knee joint slowly wears away. While this condition typically affects older people, it can also occur in younger people that are overweight, as well as those with a genetic predisposition to the disease.
Traditional methods of treatment include cortisone injections, anti-inflammatory pain medications and even a partial or total knee replacement surgery, in severe cases. However, patients searching for natural joint pain relief from knee arthritis have options such as weight loss, physical therapy and alternative treatments like magnetic or light therapy.

Bursitis: A bursa is a sack filled with natural lubricant that sits over the kneecap. Bursitis is a condition in which the area above the kneecap accumulates excess fluid and becomes swollen, inflamed and painful. It is sometimes referred to a "housemaid's knee" because it is common in people who kneel frequently, such as house cleaners, gardeners or carpet layers. The most effective knee pain relief for bursitis is to avoid the aggravating activity, although in some cases the fluid may have to be drained by a doctor.
Injury: Whether it is the result of a slip and fall, a car accident, or related to sports or exercise, injury is perhaps the most common trigger of chronic knee pain. Dislocation of the knee cap, ligament tears, and damage to the cartilage or meniscus can produce agonizing discomfort and even render some people completely immobile.

When it comes to managing pain, many patients turn to prescription painkillers. These chemical compounds may provide short-term knee pain relief but can be hazardous to one's health in the long run. They can bring about a host of unpleasant side effects and become addictive. For natural joint pain relief, patients can turn to holistic alternatives such as massage therapy, therapeutic light treatment, and even the use of magnets.

If you are experiencing any of the above conditions, consult your doctor or health care specialist to determine which course of treatment is best for you.

Surgery is not the only option for chronic neck and shoulder pain. Natural pain relief methods can provide an alternative.
Chronic neck and shoulder pain affects millions of people across the world every single day, limiting their mobility and lowering their quality of life. Whether the condition is the result of a sports injury, a car accident or a medical condition, shoulder joint pain and neck discomfort can remain a lifelong problem if not treated properly.

Many people mistakenly believe that surgery and painkillers are the only available options for neck pain relief and shoulder pain relief. They are not aware that there is an alternative to invasive procedures and chemical-based medications. There are actually numerous natural forms of neck and shoulder pain treatment that are just as effective as traditional methods procedures.

Massage therapy, for instance, is a popular solution for lasting neck pain relief. By putting pressure on certain trigger points and stimulating movement in the muscles and ligaments, massage therapy increases circulation throughout the body. This strengthens muscles and instigates the body's natural healing process, thereby decreasing the frequency and severity of neck and shoulder pain.

Relief can also be found through low-impact exercise such as yoga, tai chi and Pilates. The slow, focused, stretching and balancing movements involved in these exercises produce increased strength and flexibility while offering a much lower risk of injury. They also help to reduce stress, which is another common cause of neck and shoulder pain.

Deep penetrating light therapy is another natural form of neck and shoulder pain treatment. Although it is not as well known, it can be just as effective in relieving chronic neck and shoulder joint pain. In this process, infrared light penetrates the skin and is absorbed by the underlying tissue. This stimulates the body's production of endorphins, which block certain chemicals that transmit pain from the brain.

Magnets can also be used as a form of shoulder and neck pain treatment. In this type of therapy, magnets are pressed to the skin at the point of pain and their magnetic fields are used to help relax capillaries. This can encourage blood flow and reduce pain.

The primary benefit to seeking natural alternatives to surgical or chemical forms of neck pain treatment is the peace of mind that comes from knowing you will not be exposing your body to any harmful side effects. Before you decide to take drastic measures, consult an alternative health care specialist or a homeopathic doctor for advice on relieving chronic pain through any of these methods.
